I’m very relieved that the winner of the Presidential race was decided so quickly for many astrologers, myself included, felt it would be a long drawn out event. This was mostly because election day fell on the same day as when Mercury stationed retrograde. Mercury is called the “trickster” and can turn things around quickly and unexpectedly when it wants. And evidently it did just this yesterday.
“Conflict exists strictly as an opportunity to raise our consciousness.”
How the next 4 years will play out remains to be seen, but I do feel a corner has been turned. Another key time to watch is around the 13th-14th of December when Mercury hits the shadow point of this retrograde. Basically, the shadow point is when a planet comes to the same place in the sky it was when it stationed retrograde, in this case 4 degrees Sagittarius. It will be also be returning to Scorpio here in a few days (11/13) and then station direct on the 26th, re-entering Sagittarius on 12/10 and then, come back to where it is now, at the station point. Got all that? (More on Mercury hitting the shadow point in December AstroCurrents.)
Mercury stationing retrograde in Sagittarius is a key to why the elections went the way they did. Sagittarius is the sign of tolerance and freedom and open-mindedness. And it would seem that these are qualities that the majority of voters were hoping for when they filled out their ballot. Sagittarius always seeks the higher ground, and then views the landscape from there. It asks us to do the same…to look beyond the current circumstances and see what is possible. The term “possibility thinking” fits this sign perfectly.
I can see now how Mercury stationing in Sagittarius on the day of the election was a chance to see that these are possible realities. How appropriate as we come more fully into the Age of Light! To see what is possible and to not look (or go) back, but to move into a new way of seeing things. One that seeks to be founded on unity, not division. Do I think Obama is the PERFECT president to do all this? I don’t know that for certain…but “fate” has chosen him and so I will go with that! I will say that I do feel he was the best option available.
The Age of Light Is Upon Us
“Anything capable of decay is also capable of regeneration.”
As I explain in Zodiac of Light, we are moving into an area of our galaxy that will allow Earth to begin to receive greater Light from the Great Central Sun–the source of the Divine Light that sustains all life (that’s the simple version). This Light is revealing what has been hidden, unseen or concealed. The outer planets are playing key parts as well:
- Pluto in Capricorn is tearing down the outdated foundation and structures of the old age.
- Uranus in Aries is bringing forth bold, new options while increasing enthusiasm.
- Neptune in Pisces is waiting in the silence to show us the path to our Divine natures and true Source.
There is lots more to come in this transition from the old age to the new one. But the planets are aligned to help make it all happen. Our part is to awaken to the reality of what is happening…and to welcome the Light as it enters our realm.
I will be discussing lots more on how to attune to the cosmic rhythms that are sending waves of Light into our realm in the coming months AstroCurrents. There is so much happening!
What happened in the election is, I feel, visible demonstration that the Shift to the Age of Light is on…Hallelujah!
Mercury is retrograde until November 26th, and while it is many find things to be topsy-turvy, chaotic and uncertain to one degree or another.
I find there are two basic reasons for this:
1-You are going too fast. Mercury retrograde wants us to slow down so we see things we often overlook.
2-You are trying to go forward when you may well be needing to look back (see below.)
Every astrological event has a purpose and is by design able to help us in some way. We just need to attune to the energies present with awareness as to what it is about.
Here are some things to do while Mercury is retrograde:
- Rethink your plans
- Reconsider your options
- Reconnect with someone from your past
- Regroup at a core level
- Revisit past ideas
- Recommit to your New Year’s resolutions
- Revamp your mission statement
- Rewrite your resume or bio
- Redo your budget
- Reinvent yourself in some way
Have you be “re-ing” in some way? Please feel free to share!
Mercury goes retrograde 3 times each year for 21 days. And when it does, many have come to recognize its signature effects.
Communications go awry, misunderstandings are more frequent, making decisions is tricky at best and electronic devices seem to go haywire, to name a few.
Mercury is the planet that has rulership over all forms of communication–verbal and written, personal and professional, even agreements and contracts. And so yes, when it goes retrograde these areas of our life can get disrupted and go tilt.
Having an understanding of what to expect when Mercury goes retrograde helps enormously in preparing for it. There are certainly things you can do beforehand, and during, a retrograde period that help you in dealing with it. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Make important arrangements, meetings, travel plans, etc. at least 1 week prior to 3/12.
- If possible, try not to make major purchases during a Mercury retrograde period (there are exceptions to this…more on that in a minute).
- Back up computers, check and re-check meetings and plans, especially those that will fall in the retrograde period (3/12 to 4/4).
- And because of the added Neptunian influence, be sure to take some time out for retreat and to nurture the spiritual side of your life.
Each time Mercury stations retrograde is an opportunity to work with the mental in new ways, to gain new perception by looking at issues differently and to slow things down and reflect rather than jump. Understanding these dynamics is your best bet in making the most of these most interesting astrological influence.

Yeah! Mercury turns direct today! Ever since it went retrograde on Nov 23rd, things have been so topsy-turvy. Miscommunications, electronic problems, scheduling snafus, difficulty focusing and more were common place. But now, it’s direct and these things should all get better…just in time for Holiday travel and New Year planning. Enjoy!
Mercury is about to turn retrograde which always seems to strike a cord of “OMG—here we go” from many people. The actual retrograde period will begin August 2 and go until the 26th. But we are already feeling the effects.
This Is Not A “Normal” Mercury Retrograde
While every Mercury retrograde has some similarities, each one has it’s own flavor, as well. And this one has some very interesting flavors going on.
Let’s recap what we can expect from Mercury Retrograde
We have come to know that when Mercury is retrograde it is likely we will experience issues and challenges with communications (verbal, written, electronic, etc.), misunderstandings seem to occur more often, mix-ups happen with arrangements and plans, computers and related devices act up, etc. (You can learn more about what to expect during Mercury retrograde on my talk, available here.)
But this one has an added element that makes it the most unusual Mercury retrograde I can remember.
From July 28th to August 7th, Mercury will be in Virgo opposing Neptune in Pisces.
To understand this unusual aspect, let’s look at what each of them are separately.
Mercury in Virgo loves order, is efficient, thinks in a linear fashion, works off a list and pays great attention to detail. We could say it counts the trees while not even noticing it is in a beautiful forest.
Neptune reveals to us the vision for our life. It rules our dreams, imagination, what inspires us and what we hope for. It opens us to the inner and higher realms, showing us that there is more, far more, to life that what we generally perceive with our lower, rational minds.
Neptune in Pisces sees things holistically and does not see boundaries around anything. (The song Imagine has a most Neptunean message and in fact, imagination is ruled by Neptune.)
